Long Island, NY is a 118 mile long island, which extends northeast from New York City into the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound.
Suffolk County is one of two counties located on the eastern portion of Long Island, in the U.S. state of New York.
As of the last census, the population was almost 1.5 million people and as the name suggests, Suffolk County was named after the county of Suffolk in England, from which its earliest settlers came.
Suffolk and Nassau (the other Long Island county) are usually referred to as their collective, "Long Island", by local residents - as distinct from the New York City boroughs of Queens (Queens County) and Brooklyn (Kings County), which geographically make up the island's western end.
Forbes Magazine recently named Suffolk County, along with Nassau County, New York, as the safest region in the United States, with the lowest crime rate. The magazine went on to say that, Suffolk County is among the top 25 richest counties in America.
History of Suffolk County
Suffolk County was an original county of New York State, one of twelve created in 1683. It was known for a time as East Riding of Yorkshire. Its boundaries were essentially the same as at present, with only minor changes in the boundary with its western neighbour, which was originally Queens County but since 1899 has been Nassau County.
Suffolk County shares many similarities with its English namesake, most notably its excellent farming conditions. In fact it is now the leading agricultural county in the state of New York. That Suffolk is still number one in farming, even with the development that has taken place, is a tribute to thoughtful planning, along with the excellent soil, favourable weather conditions, and the work of dedicated farmers in this region.
